and Other Verses
The Story of Rosina and Other Verses
Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., 1895.
First edition thus. 8vo. Red cloth with elaborate gilt lettering and pastoral design. Top edge gilt. Profusely illustrated in line by Hugh Thomson. A very good copy indeed.
Dobson was a 19th century English poet who used French poetic forms, such as the ballade and rondeau, to write witty, charmingly fresh poems set in the 18th century. Thomson's illustrations, drawn with exquisite delicacy, made him the perfect illustrator for Dobson's poety, as his "hand is never so happy as when it works in the half-light of a bygone time" [Preface].
