Beorhtnoth is a work of historical fiction, the central part of which is an alliterative verse-drama inspired by the Old English poem The Battle Of Maldon. This is preceded by some historical background on Beorhtnoth's death at the Battle Of Maldon in Essex where he commanded the English army. The section following the poem is a literary criticism of the Old English poem that inspired the work, The Battle Of Maldon.
It was later published in The Tolkien Reader (1966), Poems And Stories (1980), and The Treason of Isenguard (A27).
PROVENANCE: C.H.O. Scaife (poet, 1900-1988), his bookplate to front pastedown.
