Translated by Alexander Teixeira De Mattos
The Blue Bird Translated by Alexander Teixeira De Mattos
Methuen, 1911.
First illustrated edition. 4to. Publisher's rare deluxe full suede, blocked in black to the upper cover and lettered and decorated gilt to the spine. Top edge gilt, other uncut. Twenty-five tipped in colour plates on art paper, under tissue guards. A very good copy, the spine a little toned and dry, with wear to the spine ends. Hinges sound, but some cracking after the half title, exposing the gutter.
The first illustrated edition of this work, with no edition statement to the title page and dated "October 1911" to title page verso. Cayley-Robinson was also responsible for the poster and stage designs for The Blue Bird which premiered at the Haymarket Theatre in December 1909. Contemporary critics described the artwork as 'almost divine in their symphonic loveliness of colour and design'.
