First edition. Large paper issue, number 66 of 113 copies. Small 4to. Finely bound by Bayntun Riviere in full blue morocco, gilt rules and vignettes to upper and lower boards, raised bands to the spine, with gilt lettering, rules and vignettes to the sections. Ornamental gilt turn-ins and marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Eight full page steel engravings and numerous illustrations in the text by H.J. Ford and Jacob Hood. A very near fine copy, slightly faded to spine and a little offsetting from the turn-ins, but otherwise clean, fresh and attractive.
The first of Lang's coloured fairy books. Lang had grown up with a love of myths and fables, and towards the end of the 1880s he decided, with his wife's help, to collect and publish some of his favourite tales. The Blue Fairy Book was the result, published in 1889 it met with great critical acclaim. The tales include Cinderella, Aladdin, Little Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, Goldilocks and many other classics.
