First edition, first state, with "Quay Street" on title page and "J.W. Arrowsmith, Bristol" on front paste down. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine and black lettering and design on upper cover. Illustrations by A. Fredericks. A good copy, wear to spine ends with a couple of closed tears to the cloth. The first gathering, comprising the half-title and title leaves, is starting but holding to the upper thread. Previous owner's name to the half title.
Bibliographically, a much misunderstood book. The first state, requiring the publisher's name and not an address to head the adverts on the front pastedown, is rare.
