CRICKET'S FIRST BIOGRAPHIES
Cricket. Sketches of the Players
Simkin, Marshall & Co., 1846.
First edition. Original publisher's buff card wrappers printed in black to upper cover, bound in later cloth. A very good copy indeed with the most minor wear to the corners of the wrappers.
William Denison was cricket's first journalist and his Sketches of the Players, the first book of cricket biography, contains 37 sketches of contemporary players and a more detailed description of the person and talents of Alfred Mynn. Denison was also the first Secretary of Surrey CCC at the time and had firm opinions of how the laws should be developed, such as the universal acceptance of round arm bowling. These views are promoted throughout the work.
Rare with the original wrappers in such nice condition.
