The Tale of Mr. Tod
F. Warne & Co, 1912.
First edition. 12mo. Grey paper covered boards, lettered in brown and with pictorial onlay to the upper cover. Pictorial endpapers, 14 colour illustrations and many small line drawings. A lovely, bright copy in almost fine condition. Boards and pages, clean and crisp, with just a little foxing to the page edges.
On sending the manuscript for Tod to her publisher's Potter wrote of it "I think this story is amusing". It differs from her other stories in that the principal characters are villains. The opening section of the original manuscript read "I am quite tired of making goody goody books" whilst the book on publication read, "I have made many books about well behaved people."
It differs also in that it has fewer colour illustrations, introduces the use of line drawings and moves away from the style of short paragraphs used in the early tales.
