George Newnes Ltd., 1898.
Second edition. Two volumes. 8vo. Pictorial petrol blue cloth, elaborately lettered and decorated in silver and gilt. With a fore-edge painting to each volume by Margaret Costa and signed "MC". The painting to the first volume shows the Fram navigating icy waters, under a fabulous sky of reds, blues, pinks and oranges, while a polar bear looks on. The painting to the second volume shows two men and a pack of dogs preparing for a sledging journey, with the Fram in the background. One colour plate from Nansen's own sketch, portrait frontispiece of Nansen, "around 120 full page black and white illustrations", plus many illustrations in the text. Fold out map in colour to the rear. A very good set, hinges a littler tender and with a small stain to the lower cover of the second volume. Fore-edge paintings in excellent condition.
Nansen's own account of "a remarkable achievement in Polar exploration" (PMM). He designed a ship, the Fram, to "slip like an eel out of the embraces of the ice" and which he hoped would drift along the ice to the North Pole. His account of the difficult journey by sledge and the return of the Fram to Tromso became a worldwide bestseller.
