First edition. 8vo. Publisher's navy cloth, lettered silver, in the blue printed dustwrapper. Thirty-five plates, chiefly after photographs, and a folding chart. A near fine copy, with a little spotting to the endpapers, in a very crisp, near fine dustwrapper.
Mill's history of the first hundred years of the Royal Geographical Society. Of particular interest are the two chapters devoted to the Presidency of Clements Markham, and the revival of Polar Exploration instigated by the RGS between 1892 and 1905.
PROVENANCE: From the library of distinguished polar historian Ann Savours Shirley, with her ownership inscription to the front endpaper, and a small bookplate to the front pastedown.
