Journal De L'Expedition Antarctique Francaise 1903-1905
IN THE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS
Le "Francais" Au Pole Sud Journal De L'Expedition Antarctique Francaise 1903-1905
Ernest Flammarion, 1906.
First edition. Large 8vo. In the rare original publisher's illustrated wrappers, printed in black and grey on white and depicting Adelie penguins. Photographic frontispiece, 318 illustrations in the text, including mainly photographs, with five maps and four sketches. One large folding map, in this copy loosely inserted between pp. 474 and 475, as issued and as per Rosove's variant c. A fine copy, remarkably well preserved in the rare original wrappers. Both the wrappers and contents are clean and bright, with a little wear at the head of the spine resulting in miniscule loss, and very minor wear to the extremities.
An exceptional copy of Charcot's narrative of his first Antarctic expedition, the first extenstive exploration of Graham Land, in the original illustrated wrappers.
"Charcot originally set out to rescue Otto Nordenskjold, the missing Swedish explorer. Though he failed in the race to Nordenskjold, he managed to create the best charts to date of large portions of the Antarctic Peninsula and Gerlache Strait" (Taurus).
Large and heavy books such as this very rarely survive in original condition with their wrappers intact. The vast majority of copies were either bound up by early owners, preserving the original wrappers but losing the uninterrupted pictorial impact of the wraparound design, or bound up some time later, after the wrappers have completely disintegrated. As a result, it is most uncommon to encounter a copy so well preserved.
