The Arabian Nights
Constable & Co., 1912.
First edition illustrated by Bull. 4to. Maroon cloth with gilt titles on upper cover and spine and rectangular colour onlay to the upper cover. Twenty beautiful colour plates, under captioned tissue guards, and many black and white drawings. A very good copy. The spine is faded as is almost inevitable with this book. Apart from the fading and a small rub to the top of the spine the book is in very good condition. All of the wonderful colour plates are perfect and the contents are clean. Scarce.
Rene Bull was an Irish born artist who became very well known as a war artist during the Armenian Massacres, the Boer Wars and the Sudan. Bull had a great interest in the art of the Orient and his travels to the Middle East provided him with a knowledge of Arab costume and customs which comes across beautifully in his two most celebrated books, The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and The Arabian Nights. The plates here are full of Oriental colours mixed with an Art Nouveau style.
PROVENANCE: The George Fleming copy, his discrete bookplate on the front pastedown.
