Scott's Northern Party
SCOTT'S TERRA NOVA EXPEDITION
Antarctic Adventure Scott's Northern Party
T. Fisher Unwin, 1914.
First edition, first issue. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth, lettered and decorated in silver. Top edge gilt. Photographic frontispiece with tissue guard, and 148 further photographs across 97 plates. Four diagrams in the text and three folding maps. A bright, near fine copy. In uncommonly nice condition, with sound hinges and no loss of colour to the spine. Ink ownership inscription and slight tape ghosting to endpapers.
A beautiful copy of Priestley's account of the six-man Northern party on the Terra Nova expedition, based on his detailed daily diary entries.
"The account of the second winter in the snow cave at Inexpressible Island is an Antarctic classic: necessity forced ingenious solutions to the most basic of human survival and emotional needs" (Rosove).
Priestley noted in 1940 that the book had become rare as "a thousand copies were burnt by a Zeppelin bomb in Fisher Unwin's warehouse in the winter of 1916". Copies without either darkening or fading to the spine are most uncommon.
Rosove 256a.
