Stories From the Arabian Nights

Retold by Laurence Housman

DULAC, Edmund Stories From the Arabian Nights Retold by Laurence Housman

Hodder & Stoughton, 1907.

Second edition. Large 4to. Brown cloth with lettering and vignettes in gilt and blue. Colour frontis and forty nine other colour plates, under captioned tissue guards, which are interspersed throughout the text. A near fine copy, neat gift inscription on the front free endpaper and a short marginal tear to page 51.

This book is Dulac's first major commission. It is an impressive volume, including stories from the Arabian Nights, such as Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and The King of the Ebony Isles. The illustrations for this volume are superb, with rich colours and the introduction of Dulac's trademark starry skies. The initial printing of this book has all the plates together at the end of the text. This edition, published one month after the first, has them spread through the tale, as the publisher's found this to be more popular with readers.
