Originally published serially, "La storia di un burattino" (The story of a puppet) was published over several months of 1881 in the Giornale per i Bambini, a very popular Italian children's magazine. In the last of these pieces the subversive Pinocchio is hanged and dies, Collodi clearly tiring of his character and with no intent of resurrecting him. However, just as Conan Doyle was to do with Sherlock Holmes, public demand caused Collodi to continue the very popular story, so in 1882 he published piecemeal "Le avventure di Pinocchio". These two separate serialisations were published together in book form in Florence in 1883 with illustrations by Enrico Mazzanti, and then in English as part of the Children's Library Series in 1892. This edition is now uncommon and due to its notoriously fragile construction, particularly rare in nice condition.
