INSCRIBED BY THE OTHER EVELYN
Vile Bodies
Chapman & Hall, 1932.
First pocket edition. Publisher's marbled cloth lettered in gilt. Inscribed on the front endpaper by Waugh's recently estranged wife, Evelyn Gardner, to their mutual friend, Etienne Gilson, "To Etienne with love from Evelyn". A near fine copy.
Evelyn Gardner, one of the Bright Young Things of the late 1920's, met Waugh at a party in 1927 and by 1928 they were married, much to the displeasure of Gardner's family. The marriage was an unqualified disaster from the start and capitulated with Gardner's elopement with John Heygate only a year in.
Vile Bodies was written during the period of Waugh's marriage and draws upon the life and high jinks of his wife and her friends.
