The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Bodley Head, 1930.
First edition illustrated by S.G. Hulme Beaman. Black buckram, lettered and decorated in gilt, in black dustwrapper with matching design in green. Pictorial endpapers. Eight wonderfully sinister black and white plates by Beaman, plus chapter headings and tailpieces. A near fine copy, spine gilt oxidised and bookplate on the front pastedown, in a very good dustwrapper, split to the hinge of the front flap and small loss to the head of the spine.
Beaman's illustrations have the feel of German expressionist film and theatre sets, with disorienting planes and strange light-sources, which perfectly echo the disruption within the Jekyll - Hyde identity.
