SECOND FATHER BROWN IN DUSTWRAPPER
The Wisdom of Father Brown
Cassell, 1914.
First edition. Original blue cloth with titles in gilt on the spine in pictorial dustwrapper with front panel by Sydney Seymour Lucas. A near fine copy with slight oxidisation to the spine lettering and foxing to the title page in a very good dustwrapper indeed, which shows a little wear to the corners and a few closed tears internally neatly reinforced. The price on the spine has been blacked out but one can see the correct 6/-.
The only known copy in a dustwrapper of the second Father Brown book.
"As a detective writer G.K.Chesterton is sui generis, his own man on an impressive scale. His work combines imagination and intellect in a wholly original manner, imposing its own conditions with bizarre but irresistible logic." (Cooper & Pike)
Rated by Ellery Queen as "one of the three greatest detective characters ever invented" (along with Dupin and Holmes), Father Brown first appeared in book form in 1911 and quickly became one of the best loved and popular fictional detectives. Although there were three further books of stories between 1926-1935, like Conan Doyle, the best of Chesterton's detective fiction is to be found in his early work.
