First edition. 8vo. Original dark blue cloth with titles and vignette of Shackleton's ship, Endurance, on the upper cover in silver. Colour frontispiece after a photograph by Frank Hurley, with 79 further black and white photographs by Hurley all full page, and eight drawing, on 44 plates. Fold out map to rear. A very good copy indeed, generally clean with the silver decoration uncommonly bright. Very fresh internally, with only a suggestion of the browning that usually befalls the book. A little abrasion to the front pastedown, but this notwithstanding an attractive copy.
Shackleton's account of the Endurance expedition is one of the finest in the Antarctic canon and a classic of all literature on exploration.
The tale of the loss of the Endurance to the Weddell Sea, the perilous journey to Elephant Island, the unlikely voyage of the James Caird to South Georgia and the rescue mission that ensured every member of the crew survived has become legend due to Shackleton's account.
Due to the poor quality of the paper stock used for the first edition, attractive copies are rarely encountered.
