Charles Murray Pitman is the seventh of eight brothers who once crewed an entire Eton eight. At Eton he "became Captain of the Boats, sculled, played the Wall game, learned a little more, and did other wholesome things". He was Stroke for the Oxford eight, achieved the Grand and the Visitors' Cup at Henley and became President of the Oxford University Boat Club - " a typical young barbarian of the better sort."
