Harcourt Gilbey Gold - Tarka - ,

Leslie Ward, 1899.

Original chromolithograph by Spy. Image size c.35cm x 21cm. In near fine condition. Mounted, framed and glazed.

Gold was the first rower to receive a Knighthood for services to sport. Educated at Eton he stroked the Eton eight to victory in the Ladies Challenge Cup at Henley three years in a row. He rowed the Oxford Boat in four Unversity Boat Races, became Captain of Leander from 1898 - 1900, was a key member of Henley Stewards and coached crews from Oxford and Leander, including the 1908 Olympic Gold medalists. He was known by the rowing world as Tarka, as when a child he apparently has a problem pronouncing his first name. Lehmann called him one of the "really great strokes" and Vanity Fair noted "He has wonderful knees; and his legs are always loudly appreciated by the crowd at Putney."
