Henry Searle, an Australian, took up rowing as a boy, it being his only means of getting to school. One month after this print, in October 1899, he confirmed his place as 'Professional Champion Sculler Of The World' by beating Canadian William O'Connor in a race on the Thames. Though at his peak and aged only 23, he contracted typhoid on the voyage home and died on 10 December 1889. A reported 170,000 attended his memorial service in Sydney. A memorial monument was erected near Henley, New South Wales, in the middle of the Parramatta River course.
