President of the OUBC in 1893, William Alfred Littledale Fletcher competed in the Boat Race for Oxford each year until then from 1890. The Official Centenary History, describing his first race, commented that "the doggedness, rather than the brilliance, of Fletcher was the outstanding feature" of Oxford's victory by one length. He coached both Oxford and Cambridge crews later, the History remarked "one of the greatest oarsmen himself, he earned the secret at Oxford and taught it to Cambridge in 1898... and this was the foundation on which was built the magnificent Cambridge crew of 1900." Fighting in both the Second Boer War and the First World War he was awarded a DSO from the British Government and the Croix de Chevalier from the French.
