Original watercolour and gouache painting from 'The Wind in the Willows'. 100.5 x 75 cm. Signed and dated in the lower right hand corner. The image is in fine condition with no repairs or damage.
This is one of a series of paintings done over six months for the Anglia televised telling of 'The Wind in the Willows'. This painting depicts tea on the lawn at Toad Hall ' Wind in the Willows, Chapter 2':
"Rounding a bend in the river, they came in sight of a handsome, dignified old house of mellowed red brick, with well-kept lawns reaching down to the water's edge....`There's Toad Hall,' said the Rat; `and that creek on the left, where the notice-board says, "Private. No landing allowed," leads to his boat-house, where we'll leave the boat..... this is really one of the nicest houses in these parts, though we never admit as much to Toad.'"
Worsley was a celebrated artist known for his sea-scapes, he was elected President of the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1983. A very versatile artist who worked in glass, bronze, stone as well as paint, having painted Edward Heath along with colour drawings for 'Treasure Island' and PC49 for the 'Eagle' comic. While in a German prisoner of war camp Worsley famously made the ingenious dummy prisoner 'Albert' that acted as a decoy in an escape.
