An Original Watercolour - the Tea Party

This is a fine early watercolour on paper. Initialled H.B.P. 100mm x 126mm. The image shows a rabbit with a fine china tea set. A very bright and attractive image, with some spots of foxing, mainly to the margin.
This watercolour is likely to have been completed around 1892/3, possibly as a design for a Christmas card. These early pieces are much finer and more polished than the more hastily prepared watercolours done for charities in the 1920s. Even within the work Potter produced during the 1890s, there is some variance in quality, the present example being especially fine. Opportunities to acquire early watercolours of Potter's Rabbits like this one are very rare indeed.
