Stanley's famous account of the Emin Pasha relief expedition to equatorial Sudan, a work which secured his fame as an explorer and writer following the earlier Livingstone expedition:
"Honours and awards were showered on him by chambers of commerce and geographical societies throughout Europe, and he was awarded honorary degrees by the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, and Edinburgh. A reception for him, organized by the Royal Geographical Society at the Albert Hall on 5 May 1890, was attended by 10,000 people, including the Prince of Wales. Lecture tours followed, with Stanley speaking throughout Britain and America, where he travelled in a luxurious Pullman car named Henry M. Stanley." (ODNB)
