Phaedri Augusti Caesaris Liberti Fabularum Aesopiarum LIBRI QUINQUE Interpretatione et Notis Illustravit Petrus Danet Academicus. Jussu Christianissimi Regis, In Usum Serenissimi Delphini
Fredericum Leonard, 1675.
First "Dolphin" edition. 8vo. Full calf, sometime rebacked, lettered in gilt on the spine. Engraved frontis by Chauveau, plus decorative chapter headings, tailpieces and initials. A very good copy indeed, boards a little worn at the edges and previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, but internally clean.
Pierre Danet, classicist and scholar, edited and provided commentaries for Phaedrus's fables of Aesop as part of the "Dolphin Series" - a collection of bowdlerized classical works intended for the education of the Grand Dauphin, eldest son of Louis XIV.
