Five volumes, all first editions. 8vo. Original green cloth elaborately decorated in gilt and black with a different hand painted flower to the front cover of each volume. Each volume housed in its original cloth covered card box with printed paper label to the upper cover. Two hundred full page colour chromolithographic plates (forty to each volume), plus engraved head and tail pieces for each entry. A superb fine set, externally nigh perfect, with occasional light foxing to tissue guards. The boxes which, have preserved the books so magnificently, are very good with some wear to the joints. Previous owner's name stamp to the pastedown and endpapers of each volume.
The author's first major work raising his amateur interest in natural history to an art, supported by his association with various colleges and other institutions. The work was originally issued in monthly parts between 1878 and 1884 with the cloth bound volumes being issued from late 1883 at the unusually high price of 12/6.
