PUBLISHER'S FILE COPY
Lucky Jim
Gollancz, 1953.
First edition. Original green cloth in yellow dustwrapper with red and black lettering. Publisher's file copy, with Gollancz rubber stamp to dustwrapper and front endpaper and small penned "53" to rear panel. A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper, very slightly dusty and just a trace of wear to the corners, but overall an unusually bright and well preserved copy.
The author's first book and one of the most significant post-war novels, which "tests privilege and phoney upper-class values,... makes little dents in the smug fabric of hypocritical, humbugging, class-bound British society... and is a voice that a smug stable society finds it convenient to ignore" (Burgess).
"Lucky Jim gave rise to much of the angry-young-man fiction that followed, but it never met its equal." - Lev Grossman (All-Time 100 Novels)
Always uncommon due to the small numbers printed, the soft texture and colouring of the dustwrapper make it almost inevitably prone to wear and soiling and thus is very rarely encountered in anything like fine condition.
PROVENANCE: The Gollancz Archive (file copy stamps to front endpaper and dustwrapper).
