John Murray, 1875.

The British Arctic Expedition of 1875 was led by Captain George Nares, whose orders were to sail up the west coast of Greenland via Smith Sound and the Kennedy Channel where it was believed that an open polar sea would allow a clear route to the Pole. This collection of papers was published at the expense of the Society, with the aim of being 'useful to the officers of the expedition' leaving later that year. Included are geographical studies by noted explorers and scientists of the day, such as Admiral Collinson who led the 1850 expedition in search of John Franklin, and ethnographic papers on the Inuit and their language, notably by Clements Markham, Society secretary.
