First Canadian edition, translated from the French by Philip Walsh. 4to. Original slate blue cloth with gilt lettering, gilt vignette of the "Pourquoi Pas?" [Why Not?] to the upper cover and a penguin to the spine. With 52 photographs reproduced in black and white. A very good copy indeed, bright and crisp. Lower spine has a circular area of fading.
Charcot's detailed and engaging account of his voyage on the 'Why Not?', or the 'Pourquoi-Pas? and the South Polar Expedition which discovered and mapped new areas of the largely unknown continent. A fascinating insight into life onboard ship.
