Cape, 1953.
Fourteen volumes, all first editions, in first issue dustwrappers. A near fine set, which shows a little tanning to some of the spines and occasional light wear to the spine ends, but are generally bright and crisp. An excellent, uniform set.
'The scent and smoke and sweat of a casino are nauseating at three in the morning.' Thus Ian [Fleming] dragged his readers into the fast, racy world of James Bond at the start of Casino Royale...[Fleming] skilfully matched this hard edged delineation of contemporary reality with a more mythical interpretation of events. Bond is taking on the forces of evil, a heroic St George-figure fighting on the side of virtue (and the free world), saving and bedding the girl, and attempting to slay the dragon. (Andrew Lycett)
The publisher Jonathan Cape was initially sceptical, saying upon reading the manuscript, "Peter's little brother has written a book. It is not up to scratch", but he would publish it "because he's Peter's brother." 4750 copies of the first edition were printed. The book was well received and quickly reprinted. Fleming's confidence grew and he wrote a book a year for the next twelve years until his death in 1964.
Collector's have long sought the first editions of Ian Fleming, both for their attractively designed dustwrappers and for their influence on modern culture.
