Mr. Norris Changes Trains
Hogarth Press, 1935.
First edition. Original green cloth in pictorial yellow dustwrapper. Striking dustjacket design by Jack Banting. A very good copy with the usual toning to the spine and some foxing to the endpapers. In a very good dustwrapper indeed, which shows just a little wear to the spine ends and tanning to the spine.
Often referred to as the first of 'The Berlin novels' (the seuqel being 'Goodbye to Berlin') the setting is drawn from Isherwood's own experiences of living in pre-war Germany. The central character William Bradshaw is clearly autobiographical, taking his name from Isherwood's two middle names. A satirical novel providing a clear picture life in Berlin in the 1930's.
