BAKER, Sir Richard A Chronicle of the Kings of England From the Time of the Romans Government, unto the Death of King James Containing all Passages of State and Church, with all other Observations proper for a Chronicle. Faithfully Collected out of Authors Ancient and Modern; and Digested into a Method by Sir

Printed for H. Sawbridge, 1684.

Eighth impression, revised and "freed from many errors and mistakes of the former editions." Folio. Contemporary calf, sometime rebacked. Frontis and engraved title, title page. Frontis etching of Charles II by William Sherwin. Some marks and stains, as might be expected, but overall a handsome copy.

Baker [1568-1645] a politician during the reign of James I, was knighted 1602, made High Sheriff of Oxfordshire in 1620, and in 1635 was incarcerated in the Fleet Prison for debt. It was whilst in prison that he wrote, amongst other works, A Chronicle of the King's of England, first published in 1643. In this 1684 edition the sections on Charles I and Charles II are by Edward Phillips, Milton's nephew, and the account of the Restoration is attributed to Thomas Clarges, Monck's brother in law. Includes A Catalogue of the Nobility. The Chronicle was enormously popular, going through nine editions during the 17th Century, plus two translations into Dutch. Bishop William Nicholson, [1655 - 1727] in his assessment of British histories described the Chronicle as "the best Read and liked of any hitherto publish'd, But Learned Men will be of another Opinion."
