Heinemann, 1922.
First edition. 8vo. Paper covered boards with Nicholson's illustrations to the covers, in the original publisher's pictorial dustwrapper with same design as the covers. Endpapers illustrated in colour with lots of drawings of little rabbits. Seven wonderful colour illustrations, some double page, all in lovely bold colours and each with a caption printed at the bottom. A near fine book, 1cm is slightly darkened at the spine top which matches the 1cm chip to the dustwrapper, which is otherwise a fine bright copy in lovely condition. Some light spotting to pages.
This book is a classic children's tale and one which has been loved by generations of children. The book tells of the Velveteen Rabbit's longing to become "real". His friend the skin horse tells him he can only achieve this once a child loves him. The lovely story is accompanied by illustrations which are completely in harmony with the text. This is a delicate book which is now highly sought after and very elusive. It is unusual to find such a delicate book from the early 1920's in such nice condition as this.
