The Black Book
Obelisk Press, 1938.
First edition. Original buff pictorial wrappers, lettered in black. Author's presentation copy, inscribed twice on the half title, the first in a small neat hand, "To Peter from Larry, Paris 1938" and the second, thirty five years later in a large, expansive, possibly rather drunk hand, "Inscribed for Peter Bull by his old friend Larry Durrell, April 1973" with the downstroke of the I running the height of the page, taking in the downstrokes of the P and B. A good only copy, with the spine relaid, retaining all but the top inch and the corners frayed. Pages browned with the preliminaries beginning to crack at the gutter.
Peter Bull was an actor, writer, occultist, and arctophile. Durrell met Bull through George Wilkinson in the early 1930s and formed a lasting friendship, as the two inscriptions are testament to. Bull and Durrell saw each other intermittently over the years, mainly in Corfu and London.
