Translated from Old French by Sebastian Evans.
one of Jessie's most important achievements
The High History of the Holy Graal Translated from Old French by Sebastian Evans.
J.M.Dent & Co., 1903.
First edition. Royal 8vo. Pale blue pictorial cloth decoration in black and gilt. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Illustrated title page, frontispiece and 22 full page illustrations. The illustrations are very detailed line drawings, some in a red decorative border. There are also 36 ornamental head pieces. A very good copy indeed. The pale blue covers remain generally clean and bright, with a trace of tanning to the spine. Corners bumped and previous owner's name to the front free endpaper. Some foxing to the endpapers, but contents and illustrations are bright and clean.
This sumptuously produced book is described by Colin White as "one of Jessie's most important achievements". The elaborate borders are reminiscent of Burne-Jones and William Morris' productions for the Kelmscott Press. The paper is of high quality which feels lovely in the hand and the illustrations are fantastical and striking. White describes them as giving the reader "a glimpse of a land and time remote from reality".
