Handsome contemporary binding of quarter navy morocco over marbled boards. Original watercolour sketch by Touchatout (pen name of Léon-Charles Bienvenu) inserted as an additional frontispiece. Illustrations by A. Lynch, colour frontispiece engraved by Gaujean and 10 full page black and white engravings as well as numerous smaller drawings in the text. An excellent copy.
When this story, known in English first as The Lady of the Camellias and later as Camille, was first staged in Vaudeville Theatre, Paris in 1852 and was an immediate hit. Giuseppe Verdi set about writing an opera based on the tale, which he named La Traviata.
