First edition illustrated by Rackham. 4to. Slate coloured cloth decorated with gilt lettering and vignettes. Top edge gilt. Full page original sketch to the half titles, showing the angler asleep with a cheeky bird stealing worms from his bait box. The inscription reads "With best wishes / to Robert + Awdrey / from Edyth + Arthur / Arthur Rackham / Christmas 1931". Pictorial silhouette endpapers. Twelve colour plates under captioned tissue guards, and numerous black and white drawings. A very good copy indeed, slight ding to the top edge and spine lightly sunned. Cloth remains bright and gilt gleaming.
PROVENANCE: Christmas gift to Robert and Awdry Starkie from Arthur and Edyth Rackham. Arthur Rackham married Edyth Starkie in 1903 and each Christmas Arthur sent his latest book to her family.
