Uncle Tom's Cabin Or Life Among the Lowly. A Tale of Slave Life in America
Nathaniel Cooke, 1853.
Early illustrated edition. 8vo. Finely bound by the W.H.Smith bindery, after the style of Douglas Cockerall, in quarter reddish-brown morocco over paper covered boards. Raised bands, lettered in gilt and with a punched dot motif along the sides. Top edge gilt. With above one hundred and fifty illustrations, drawn by George Thomas, Esq., and T.E. Macquoid, Esq., and engraved by William Thomas, Esq. A near fine copy, with slight rubbing to the edges and some foxing internally.
Of all the English editions of Uncle Tom's Cabin published between 1852 and 1878, Cooke's was by far the most lavishly illustrated, containing about three times as many engravings as most other English editions.
