Printed for J. White by T. Bensley, 1802.
First collected edition, comprising primarily the second edition of The Natural History of Selborne. Two volumes. 8vo. Uncut in original publisher's grey boards, with paper spines and spine labels. Four plates, two of which are hand coloured including a pullout frontispiece to volume II. A handsome set, light wear to board edges, front joint of volume I splitting but holding firm, volume II with very light worming to blank gutter at front.
The Natural History of Selborne is a cornerstone of English literature and natural history and the most famous work by England's "father of ecology", Gilbert White (1720-93).
Some additional material appears here for the first time, besides the brief preface and biographical notice by John White, the author's nephew, editor and publisher of the volume. White notes that further selections from his uncle's unpublished papers have been made by Dr. John Aikin (1747-1822) and added to the Miscellaneous Observations, alongside further observations and notes by the naturalist William Markwick (1739-1812). Markwick's comparative observations, made from his home in Sussex, have also been added to the Naturalist's Calendar, where they appear in parallel to those of Gilbert White made at Selborne.
PROVENANCE: Near-contemporary inscriptions of Emily Napier to title-pages and boards, the former dated 1814. Modern inkstamps of Colonel Bunbury's Trustees to front pastedowns.
Martin (1970), p. 100.
