First George Barbier edition. 4to. An out of series copy printed on Rives paper (one of 800 copies thus), but including an extra suite of 23 black and white plates, normally reserved for 225 copies on Japon. Original pictorial wrappers. Issued without a numbered limitation page. Each cover and the title page are decorated with pochoir vignettes. Twenty further full page colour pochoir plates protected by captioned tissue guards. A fine example, occasional light spotting. Housed in custom made drop over box with fleece lining.
This is one of the most stunning of Barbier's works, with large pochoir plates in deep colours.
George Barbier was a celebrated fashion and costume designer working in Paris in the first quarter of the 20th century his designs included costumes for the Folies Bergeres and for the Ballets Russes. His book illustrations are in a distinctive art deco style, often with a hint of the Greek classical style, which he greatly admired. The use of pochoir, a stenciling technique, provides a vibrancy and depth to the illustrations which cannot be equaled with printed colour.
