The Road to Wigan Pier

with a foreword by Victor Gollancz

ORWELL, George

The first sound in the mornings was the clumping of the mill girls' clogs down the cobbled street.

ORWELL, George The Road to Wigan Pier with a foreword by Victor Gollancz

Victor Gollancz for the Left Book Club, 1937.

First edition. 8vo. Orange wrappers lettered in black. With a Left Book Club brochure on pink paper loosely laid in, 6pp. folded. Illustrated with 32 photographs. A very good copy with slight curling at corners of wrappers, spine a little creased, the edges lightly foxed.

This copy, which was not for sale to the public, precedes the publisher's trade edition.
The Left Book Club brochure in this copy offers to send money to relieve the Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, half a crown for every new member that joins under the scheme: "The Dire Necessity: Whatever the outcome of the present situation the need for relief for our Republican friends in Spain will not be less, but greater, than ever before. The failure of our Democracy as a whole to help them adquately in the past makes all the greater our duty to relieve their distress now.."
