Light in August
Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1932.
First edition, first issue with 'Jefferson' for 'Mottstown' on p. 340. Grey cloth with blue and orange lettering, pictorial dustjacket. Upper edges orange, the rest uncut. Black and white vignette to title. A fine copy in near fine dustjacket, spine just a little faded and with trivial wear to the spine ends
An excellent copy of one of Faulkner's finest novels. A work of Southern Gothic, it follows Lena Grove, a young pregnant white woman, and Joe Christmas, who passes as white but suspects he has African-American ancestry. Written while Faulkner was in dire need of money, and just before he accepted a job as a Hollywood screenwriter, this is an uncompromising treatment of race, religion and violence in the South of his own time.
