Keynes was appointed financial representative for the Treasury to the 1919 Versailles peace conference, and argued strongly that setting Germany's compensation payments too high would limit their ability to buy exports, thus damaging not only the German economy, but also that of other nations. Keynes's arguments were largely ignored, and the resulting treaty dismayed Keynes but was influential in shaping his future outlook and career.
He resigned from the Treasury and published his first two influential works on economics, The Economic Consequences of Peace and A Revision of the Treaty, which outlined the dangers of the Treaty of Versailles and reasons for a reduction in the German reparations. Both works are now seen as prophetic following the predicted hyperinflation in the German economy of 1923, and as one of the standard works of economic theory.
