The Story of Ferdinand

LEAF, Munro The Story of Ferdinand

Hamish Hamilton, 1937.

First UK edition. Square 8vo. Quarter oatmeal cloth over red paper boards lettered in red to the spine with drawing of Ferdinand to the boards, in original pictorial dustwrapper. Fabulously illustrated endpapers with a comic design of a Bull Ring poster advertising "Ferdinand the Ferocious Bull". Illustrated throughout in black and white by Robert Lawson. A fine copy in a fine dustwrapper, exceptionally bright and crisp with just the slightest hint of wear to the head of the spine.

The story of the bull who preferred to sit and smell flowers than fight the matadors, Ferdinand's tale of pacifism became a hit with children in Spain but was banned by Franco for its supposedly anti-Civil War ideology.
