Illustrated gift edition. 4to. Original green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on the upper cover and spine in green dustwrapper with a mounted plate to the upper cover. Twelve full page colour illustrations by Jessie Willcox Smith, all with tissue guards. A very near fine copy with minor surface wear, in a near fine dustwrapper with very minor wear to the head of the spine. Contemporary gift inscription to front endpaper.
The work of American artist Jessie Willcox Smith is extremely collectable. Her fame as an illustrator caused parents to seek her out for portraits of children for which she was also known. Her sensitiveness to children, their moods, expressions, and body language is obvious in each image. It remains an extraordinary achievement for one who was never a parent.
