The Life and Adventures of Valentine Vox, the Ventriloquist
ROBERT TYAS, 1840.
First edition. Contemporary half morocco over marbled boards, with raised bands and gilt lettering to the spine and marbled edges. Sixty illustrations by Thomas Onwhyn, including frontispiece. A very good copy with some wear to the spine and corners and foxing to the illustrations, occasionally heavy.
The first and best-known of Cockton's works, Valentine Vox was heavily influenced by Dickens' The Pickwick Papers. This edition is illustrated by Thomas Onwhyn, who had, in 1937, pseudonymously and without authorisation, illustrated an edition of The Pickwick Papers.
