HAND PAINTED VELLUCENT BINDING FOR CEDRIC CHIVERS

KING, Jessie M. The Story of Rosalynde Euphues golden Legacie, found after his death in his Cell at Silexedra, by Thomas Lodge.

Cedric Chivers, 1902.

A beautiful vellucent binding executed by Jessie M. King for Cedric Chivers. Number 5 of only 30 copies of the book, printed on Japanese vellum and signed by illustrator Edmund J. Sullivan. 8vo. The book is bound in full vellum with intricate designs to both covers and spine in ink and water-colour. The main image depicts two graceful knights in armour kneeling at the foot of an immense rose tree. The binding is heightened by gilt lines and a Mother of Pearl heart shaped inlay. Internally the book is illustrated with fine line drawings by Sullivan. A very good example indeed of this exquisite binding, which is bright and unfaded, showing the slightest dustiness, minor rubs to upper joint and to lower spine.

Completed in the period when Jessie was both student and teacher at the Glasgow School of Art, this work is typical of the high quality detailed designs she produced in the early 1900's. Colin White described this as "The most beautiful, and certainly the most ornate" of Jessie's vellucent binding designs. (The Enchanted World of Jessie M. King.) In a sales catalogue entitled "Beautiful Book Bindings" Cedric Chivers described this as "characteristic design in fine pen work and colour, graceful in line and charming in its arrangement of pattern" offering it for sale at £6 10 shillings.
The story of Rosalynde, originally written in 1590, was adapted by Shakespeare into the comedy 'As You Like It'.
