Introduction by Robert Ross
The Sphinx Introduction by Robert Ross
Bodley Head, 1920.
First edition illustrated by Alastair. One of only 1000 copies. 4to. White buckram with gilt titles on the spine, and gilt and blue decoration to the upper cover designed by Alastair. Ten full page illustrations printed in black and turquoise under captioned tissue guards, plus half a dozen different decorative initials, some repeated. A fine, bright copy.
Originally planned for publication before the First World War, the plates for the book were printed in Belgium and then sent to England. The war delayed publication, but also ensured that 1000 copies is all there will ever be of these illustrations, because the blocks from which they were printed were destroyed by the German invasion.
A beautiful production and some of Alastair's finest work.
