Privately Printed, 1961.
First edition. 8vo. Number 76 of 100 numbered copies. This copy signed by T.S. Eliot to the limitation page (most of the 100 are not). Additionally inscribed by the printer Susan Mahon for Rosemary Goad to the colophon, "For dearest Rosie with love from Sue, December 26th 1961". Original brown boards, title to upper board and spine gilt. With the publisher's matching slipcase. A near fine copy of a rather fragile book, usually prone to far greater wear. This copy is fresh, with a little rubbing to the lower joint and is slightly faded to the spine.
The transcript of Eliot's memorial address given at Geoffrey Faber's funeral.
Geoffrey Faber was the founding editor of Faber & Gwyer, which went on to become Faber & Faber, one of the great houses of British publishing. His decision to hire T.S. Eliot as an editor, and to publish his Poems 1909-1925, was the beginning of Eliot's lifelong service to the firm, and set Faber on the course to being the leading publisher of poetry in the English language.
This copy is particularly notable for being from the library of a successor to Faber and Eliot at the firm, Rosemary Goad. Goad joined the firm as a secretary in 1953, sharing a room with Valerie Fletcher, who would soon become Valerie Eliot on her marriage to T.S. Eliot in 1957. Goad progressed through the firm by doing publicity work while an assistant to Charles Montieth, before acquiring authors of her own to edit. In 1970 she became the first female director of the firm.
PROVENANCE: From the library of Rosemary Goad (1928-2021), the first female director of Faber & Faber.
